Zebu: Reek of the Parvenu

It's my blog and I'll cry if I want to. So I'm a gonna post some music albums here and there. Note that this is not a "review" series, at least not in siprit. I'm just posting shit I found that I have some reason to talk about. Very very often it will be because the album cover art caught my eye.

This one is part of the Chicks on the Cover series. I think that is self-explanatory, isn't it? Come for the cover, stay for the tunes?

Zebu: Reek of the Parvenu

This is a really good Greek metal band. If you like the band Death, this will appeal to you, I think. Mostly because the vocals are similar. But this is a solid band with a heavy doom sound that doesn't fall into the overtly Black Sabbath end of the spectrum. The riffs aren't boring.

There's a backing vocalist on one track who I could have swore was Michela D'Orlando from Power Symphony, but turns out is really Katerina Kostarelou from Bacchus Priest. There's a deep cut for your ass.

The cover is by Mike S. Putrefurnaced and it depicts a witchy looking woman with lovely blue hair being hauled down by little ghosts or faeries or something. Epic!

Slaying Time!

I created another blog called Blood Red Pinups where I plan to post my pinup art. I marked it as mature because I have a ton of stuff that is absolutely rated-R and doesn't fit here on Doomslakers.

If you like my pinup work and/or you like the "genre", follow the new blog. Tell your weirdo friends about it too. I don't know exactly where it will go but I know right now I'm keen on pumping a lot of energy into it.

On this one I just wanted to see if I could work with a limited pallet. So I chose about 6 or 7 warm colors and rolled with it. I appreciate artists, such as Sean Aaberg, who can work with 1 or 2 colors and make it pop. It's fun to limit yourself and work within strict bounds. Fun for me, anyway.

A Study in Spring

A Study in Spring. Started out a doodle, like most drawings. Here I wanted to draw a figure that was different than what I normally do, kind of embracing elements I (we, speaking for typical artists of my peer groups) tend to ignore or gloss over. Like bellies. People have bellies.

Yeah, that's a pretty generic name. But this one was all about drawing and not about thinking. I don't know who she is or what they are. I don't know the setting. The entire story can be read from the visual clues:

A cute adventurer in inappropriate garb ends up in a tunnel/dungeon wherein things have died and monsters lurk. She is perhaps being chased by a green-skinned meanie who is stuck behind a pesky gate in the background. Did she slam the gate on it? Meanwhile, its partner, who I named Greenboy the Grinning Grabber (like, just this instant), has found an alternate route to the delicious meal-on-two-legs and is about to chomp down. Unless she's just a badass with that knife. Is it a magic knife? Dunno.

I've been in a pin-up art mood lately. Chainmail chicks, bikini armor, scantily clad damsels doing daring deeds, etc. Perhaps it's the corona getting to me. I just wanted something fun and light and rompy.

EDIT: I wanted to say something more about this drawing. A self-critique.

I like the figures just fine. I love how the girl turned out and I'm kind of stoked about the monster in the ceiling. I also love the hinted at monster in the background. I added the little detritus on the ground as an afterthought and I'm glad I did.

I don't love the purple hallway. The floor looks pretty good, I think. But the walls are kind of boring, aren't they? Maybe I should have went with a slightly different color for the walls or the floor, to contrast them.

Also, I think it needs more stuff going on. Like... more holes in the wall with green arms sticking out. Or a chest/barrel with something climbing out of it. Or perhaps our hero needs one or two companions. I'm not sure. I might do a revision of this and see what happens. Overall, I dig it. I'm moderately happy. But I could be very happy.

More Pan-Gea stuff. This one was cool because a guy sent me a sketchbook in the mail so I could draw directly into it. It wasn't "his" sketchbook, in the traditional sense. He would take to conventions and pay comic artists to draw in it. Most of the art already in the book was from creators I didn't know but there was at least one or two pieces from big names. I just can't remember who the hell they were.

It struck me as a bit odd and risky to send a stranger such a treasure and ask them too doodle in it. But it turned out pretty good, I think. There's a color version of this that will show up in the series later. Since I'm getting old and senile I might forget I wrote this one and repeat the story like a codger telling tales of The Big One.

Keeping it loose tonight, sketching and brainstorming. Feeling pretty good. Life can be a real shitstorm, so we gotta take our breaks and our good vibes where we can get 'em.

Here's a Blood Red style doodle for ya. Blood Red, in case you didn't know, is one of the labels I slap on my pin-up style art. Back in the oughts I did a couple of pin-up books called Blood Red. Nobody noticed, and perhaps they are better left buried. I was really a bit nuts with the tits back then. Seriously.

This was some time after I watched the second LotR movie and I just thought we needed a busty pin-up Eowyn. So I did one.

And here's a colored version. This was colored by a dude named Sean Loftiss. I know nothing more about him as it's been many years since I interacted with him at all. But it's a neat color job. A little heavy on the airbrush FX, but not quite so much as to be a negative. Nice work.

Now here's a real blast from the past. One of my favorite drawings from the mid-2000s. In case you didn't know, I have a penchant for drawing plump pin-up girls. Something about a fat girl* with a sword is just exciting to me.

*So... a few people have said that using the word "fat" is not good. I adamantly disagree. There should be no stigma against it. I realize that the popular culture does stigmatize it and they are clearly wrong and stupid and need to be adjusted. So fuck 'em. Fat, plump, or whatever you prefer ain't a bad thing. Go get bent if you think otherwise.
